The
year was 1860, when Efstathios J. Barbayannis arrived at the picturesque
port of Plomari on the rich and blessed isle of Lesvos which has a
fertile land and an exquisite climate. The island's water gives life
to a superior variety of aniseed and to hundreds of rare sweet-smelling
herbs. |

The
gifted originator, bringing experience and knowledge of the distillation
process from the Russian city of Odessa, started his own first distillation,
producing an ouzo of excellent quality. |
Today,
in Plomary of Lesvos, in the modern, privately-owned distilleries
of the Barbayannis alcoholic beverage production facilities, technology
combines in perfect harmony with history and tradition. The Barbayannis
family has preserved the 140-year-old tradition faithfully and follows
the footsteps of Efstathios Barbayannis. With much love and artistic
feeling, the family members carefully select pure, natural ingredients
and take special care in applying the distillation procedure, still
performed in the old, traditional way. |

For
the past five generations, the members of the Barbayannis family have
passionately pursued perfection for the taste of ouzo, and have preserved
the traditional distillation techniques.
As a result, the Barbayannis name is identified throughout the world
with ouzo, the finest greek beverage.
This success is owed to the well-kept, secret family recipe, which,
five generations later, continues to be the basis of the quality and
taste of Ouzo Barbayanni. |
