Estate, producer of quality wines and olive oil, is a well-known traditional
farm in the western Peloponnese, founded by Theodore Mercouris in
the 1860's. |

The
first vineyard on the estate dates back to 1870, when it was planted
exclusively with cuttings of Refosco grape imported from northern
Italy. |
Over
the years, Mercouri Estate products became well-known, gaining distinctions
in various competitions and, towards the end of the last century,
being exported to Europe. |

In
1987, a new systematic effort for the revival of wine production began
at Mercouri Estate, with the initiative of Maria Kanellakopoulou-Mercouri,
Vasilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos. It included the modernization
of the old winery, the construction of underground cellars and the
extensive replantation of the vineyards to a total area of 7.5 ha.
Nowadays, a significant part of the estate's total wine production
is exported to various European and North American countries (Germany,
Belgium, England, France, Switzerland, Canada, the U.S.A. e.a.), while
recently the estate's productive activity has been extended to the
bottling and exporting of high quality olive oil (in 500cc bottles)
processed by the cold extraction method. |
