Strofilia
(the Greek word for the old vertical, wooden, champagne-style, grape
press) was created in 1980, as a hobby, by two mechanical engineers,
Yannis Maltezos and Achilleas Lampsidis. Together, they replanted
the 3-hectare Maltezos' family vineyard, in Anavissos, with Cabernet
Sauvignon and restored the century-old winemaking building. The release
of their 1983 estate Cabernet in 1985 and the opening of the first
ever wine bar in Athens, established Strofilia as a pioneer in small-scale
estate winemaking in Greece. |

In
1998 a new 400 m2 state-of-the-art winery was built in the estate
with the equivalent space in air-conditioned underground cellars.
This is now used exclusively for the making of red wine. In 1997,
a 700 m2 winery was built 5 km inland for the making of white wine
and to house the bottling line. By 2000, a third small winery will
be fully functional in the village of Mamousia in the Northern Peloponnese
at an altitude of 700 m above sea level. Strofilia, and the growers
it collaborates with, will be working here with Roditis, Asproelia,
Chardonnay, Viognier and other varieties. |
Today
Strofilia is a partnership, a company shared by two founders and an
old friend, the chemical engineer Vassilis Vlachos. |

The
annual production is about 40,000 cases consisting mainly of white
Strofilia, made from the indigenous varieties Savatiano and Roditis;
the rosé Strofilia is made from the indigenous Agiorgitiko
(St George's) and the red Strofilia from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon
and Agiorgitiko. Plans for the future include the release of limited
volumes of wines made from the ancient Greek Assyrtiko, Moschato and
Asproelia varieties, as well as the better known international ones,
such as Chardonnay and Viognier.
A special research program on winemaking and vineyard maintenance
will enable Strofilia to enter the new century with all the vineyards
classified as "Originally Grown" and all wineries certified
ISO 14000 (environmental friendly). Strofilia wines are exported to
the USA, Canada, the U.K., Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. |
