The Evharis Estate is situated in the municipality of Megara, about 64 km west of Athens on the way to the Gulf of Corinth and the Peloponnese. The new winery is situated on historic soil. In antiquity, Megara was a powerful city-state with numerous colonies in Italy and Asia Minor. Evharis is a Greek-German partnership that revived the wine industry after the areas’ near total destruction due to the philoxera some decades ago. The vineyard takes its name from the first name of the owners, Eva and Harry. These are both ancient names: Eva can be translated as "well being" and Haryy as "delight". These are feelings that all houseguests of the estate are familiar with.
Initially, Eva-Maria Böhme, architect and regional planner from Mainz in Germany and Harry Antoniou, an internationally renowned tourist entrepreneur, were merely looking for a property on the slopes of the Gerania Mountains. In the process, the couple discovered relics of the past. This reminded them of the viticultural roots in the region of Pfalz in Germany, so they decided to build a winery. At present, this winery covers 25 hectares and is part of the winemaking region in Attica that encircles the city of Athens. The estate is run with great care, the quest for quality being the driving force. The vineyard, with the noticeable tower, the storeroom and the cellar, the comfortable guests and events rooms, even the small church, were designed by Eva-Maria Böhme and were built under Harry’s supervision. The old wine press was restored. Visitors are always welcome to experience the typically Greek hospitality. Twice yearly there is an "open day", May 1st for the spring celebrations and at harvest celebration on the first weekend of September, when the new wine begins to ferment in the barrels and tanks. Traditionally, the late harvest Savatiano grape takes two days to prepare in the old "patitiri" (wine press) and everyone is invited.
The soil of the vineyards of Evharis Estate is austere, containing mainly calcium but is also rich in minerals. The grapes reach maturity through naturally mild cultivation and can be partially harvested by mid-August. The range of wines made at the Estate is made up of Greek and European grape varieties. Assyrtiko, an ancient and noble Greek variety is acknowledged to be one of the most prized white varieties on the international scene. Other white varieties include Athiri, Roditis, Savatiano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate is also having very good results with Syrah, Merlot and Grenache. The fermentation occurs in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, monitored by a skilled oenologist and a cellar master from France. Some wines undergo further fermentation for six to twelve months in small 225-litre French oak barrels.
